Transport & logistics

As the lifeblood of the Australian economy the transport and logistics sector generates tens of billions in annual revenue, providing employment for a significant portion of the population and quite literally keeps the economy moving. This multifaceted industry encompasses road, rail, air, and sea freight, as well as passenger transport, postal services, and the storage and distribution of goods, connecting businesses and communities across the vast continent. Its activities interact with virtually every aspect of the Australian economy, with its physical footprint present in all parts of the country – from big cities to remote towns.
Key ESG issue
The sector is grappling with the need to enhance road safety and manage driver fatigue and other worker WHS concerns, improve supply chain efficiency and resilience in the face of increasingly frequent climate disruptors. The sector overall has a significant carbon footprint, as its heavy reliance on fossil fuels (powering heavy and light vehicles, as well as warehouses and distribution centres) makes reducing greenhouse gas emissions its most critical climate-related challenge – even more so should Australia reinstate an economy-wide price on carbon.
